That man is named Rosh, and he had rescued Daniel after Daniel ran away from Amelek, a blacksmith to whom he had been sold to by his grandmother. Daniel has been away from civilization since, and no one comes on the mountain which he lives on. He is surprised when, one day, two figures are seen climbing the mountain. He realized that they are familiar, and then he remembers their names. He asks about his grandmother and sister, whom he had left. They answer saying that they have see his grandmother, but that his sister never has come out of the house. asking him to share their lunch, they start talking. They tell him that they are leaving for Capernaum, and when Daniel tells Joel he has seen Rosh, Joel is amazed, but then Daniel has to leave.
One of the men that he lives with, tells him that they are going to ambush a caravan, and take a slave that is as big as an ox. Daniel tells Joel to hurry and go home, but Joel says he wants to see Rosh. Then a young boy comes running and says that the caravan is near. Daniel finally tells Joel and his sister, whose name is Malthace, to get behind a bank that is near by. They get the big slave and let the caravan carry on. When Rosh sees Joel, he says that Joel has to stay there but Joel says that he is taking his sister home. Daniel has to do take care of the slave, whom they have named Samson, because no one else will. Then Rosh tells him to take off the slave`s shackles. He always has to do those jobs because he is a trained blacksmith.
Samson will still not do any thing himself, Daniel has to do everything for him. Then there is a surprise for Daniel. Simon, his friend comes to visit him. Simon tells Daniel that Amelek has died and that he can come back to the village if the wants. But Daniel is embarrassed to find that he does not want to go back. Simon, after a while, persuades Daniel to come back for one night. They bathe in a small pool of water, for after sundown it will be the Sabbath. Daniel has not done this for such a long time, and because of that he is surprised. But he bathes anyways and it is a good feeling to be clean. When they reach his home, Simon leaves him to go in alone. He is surprised to find that his sister is still possessed with demons like she had been when he had left.
On the Sabbath morning, after a very small breakfast, Simon asks Daniel to go to the synagogue with him. There is a man that Simon wants Daniel to meet. He had brought a clean cloak and some sandals for Daniel, and Daniel, realizing that this was important, put them on and set of for the synagogue with Simon. Simon tells Daniel that the man they are to see is Jesus of Nazareth and Daniel does not take much interest, just scoffs. The synagogue was packed and people were standing out in the street. When Jesus came in, he was dressed plainly, and He preached that the kingdom was at hand. Daniel was trying to figure out what Jesus means but he just can`t figure it out. During the night, he leaves, and goes back to the mountain.
Daniel decides to go to Capernaum and look for Joel. When he got there (to Joel`s home) he was surprised at the richness of their house and he felt out of place there. Malthace does not say much, like she is mad at him or something. Joel`s father says he is welcome there but Daniel does not feel welcome. Joel`s father then asks Daniel lots of questions about himself. But then they begin to argue about Romans, and Daniel is banned from going there ever again. Daniel has lost a recruit and a friend.
Daniel is going back to the mountain when he has to give water to a Roman. Instead he throws the water in the roman`s face but then he is hit with a spear. The Romans are chasing him now. He went as fast as he could (which was not fast) to Joel`s house. He knew he was not welcome there but he needed help. When he knocked on the door, Malthace answered, and told him to go away. But then she pulled him into a storage room.
Daniel tells Joel and Malthace about his family and they all make an oath to avenge Daniel`s father, and to fight for Israel and for God`s Victory. They make the bronze bow mentioned in one of the psalms of David their symbol.
Daniel was tired long before he reached the mountain and at the bottom of the mountain he had to rest. Then Samson carried him up the mountain and took care of him for three days. Rosh`s dagger was bent and he told Daniel to fix it. Daniel told him he did not have the right tools but Rosh did not care. So Daniel went to see Simon, for he had the right tools. When he got there, the shop was bolted and someone told him Simon had followed the Preacher. They see miracles and they get the things Daniel needs from Simon.
