The Bronze Bow Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1
Eighteen year old Daniel bar Jamin, lives on a mountain with the man who had rescued him one night while he was half dead. That man is named Rosh, and he had rescued Daniel after Daniel ran away from Amelek, a blacksmith to whom he had been sold to by his grandmother. Daniel has been away from civilization since, and no one comes on the mountain which he lives on. He is surprised when, one day, two figures are seen climbing the mountain. He realized that they are familiar, and then he remembers their names. He asks about his grandmother and sister, whom he had left. They answer saying that they have see his grandmother, but that his sister never has come out of the house. asking him to share their lunch, they start talking. They tell him that they are leaving for Capernaum, and when Daniel tells Joel he has seen Rosh, Joel is amazed, but then Daniel has to leave.
Chapter 2
One of the men that he lives with, tells him that they are going to ambush a caravan, and take a slave that is as big as an ox. Daniel tells Joel to hurry and go home, but Joel says he wants to see Rosh. Then a young boy comes running and says that the caravan is near. Daniel finally tells Joel and his sister, whose name is Malthace, to get behind a bank that is near by. They get the big slave and let the caravan carry on. When Rosh sees Joel, he says that Joel has to stay there but Joel says that he is taking his sister home. Daniel has to do take care of the slave, whom they have named Samson, because no one else will. Then Rosh tells him to take off the slave`s shackles. He always has to do those jobs because he is a trained blacksmith.
Chapter 3
Samson will still not do any thing himself, Daniel has to do everything for him. Then there is a surprise for Daniel. Simon, his friend comes to visit him. Simon tells Daniel that Amelek has died and that he can come back to the village if the wants. But Daniel is embarrassed to find that he does not want to go back. Simon, after a while, persuades Daniel to come back for one night. They bathe in a small pool of water, for after sundown it will be the Sabbath. Daniel has not done this for such a long time, and because of that he is surprised. But he bathes anyways and it is a good feeling to be clean. When they reach his home, Simon leaves him to go in alone. He is surprised to find that his sister is still possessed with demons like she had been when he had left.
Chapter 4
On the Sabbath morning, after a very small breakfast, Simon asks Daniel to go to the synagogue with him. There is a man that Simon wants Daniel to meet. He had brought a clean cloak and some sandals for Daniel, and Daniel, realizing that this was important, put them on and set of for the synagogue with Simon. Simon tells Daniel that the man they are to see is Jesus of Nazareth and Daniel does not take much interest, just scoffs. The synagogue was packed and people were standing out in the street. When Jesus came in, he was dressed plainly, and He preached that the kingdom was at hand. Daniel was trying to figure out what Jesus means but he just can`t figure it out. During the night, he leaves,and goes back to the mountain.
Chapter 5
Daniel decides to go to Capernaum and look for Joel. When he got there (to Joel`s home) he was surprised at the richness of their house and he felt out of place there. Malthace does not say much, like she is mad at him or something. Joel`s father says he is welcome there but Daniel does not feel welcome. Joel`s father then asks Daniel lots of questions about himself. But then they begin to argue about Romans, and Daniel is banned from going there ever again. Daniel has lost a recruit and a friend.
Chapter 6
Daniel is going back to the mountain when he has to give water to a Roman. Instead he throws the water in the roman`s face but then he is hit with a spear. The Romans are chasing him now. He went as fast as he could (which was not fast) to Joel`s house. He knew he was not welcome there but he needed help. When he knocked on the door, Malthace answered, and told him to go away. But then she pulled him into a storage room.
Chapter 7
Daniel tells Joel and Malthace about his family and they all make an oath to avenge Daniel`s father, and to fight for Israel and for God`s Victory. They make the bronze bow mentioned in one of the psalms of David their symbol.
Chapter 8
Daniel was tired long before he reached the mountain and at the bottom of the mountain he had to rest. Then Samson carried him up the mountain and took care of him for three days. Rosh`s dagger was bent and he told Daniel to fix it. Daniel told him he did not have the right tools but Rosh did not care. So Daniel went to see Simon, for he had the right tools. When he got there, the shop was bolted and someone told him Simon had followed the Preacher. They see miracles and they get the things Daniel needs from Simon.
Chapter 9
Daniel steals a bag of gold for Rosh from a rich man, but then gives him one of his two daggers to protect himself with. Daniel realized that that man was a child of God just the same. Rosh does not like it that Daniel cares. He says that Daniel has a soft streak in him.
Chapter 10
Daniel got a note saying that his grandmother was dying, and so he set of right away to go and see her before she died. When he got home, he found a locked door and he had to bust it open. He found a very scared Leah and his dying grandmother. He started reciting the twenty- third psalm, and then Leah started reciting with him. his grandmother slipped away in the night.
Chapter 11
When the grandmother was buried, Simon came to see Daniel. He said he was going to go and follow the preacher, and he offered his shop for Daniel to work and live in. And he could bring Leah along too. He said yes. but the problem was getting Leah there. Leah had not been out of the house since their parents had died, and she was terrified of other people. One of the neighbors built a closed in wagon, so that no one would be able to see her and he let them use it. Finally Leah agrees to go with him and they take their few belongings to Simon`s house. Leah does all the woman`s work at the new house and even tends to a garden. A Roman comes into the shop to have some work done, and Daniel does it rudely and then shuts the door when the an looks at Leah.
Chapter 12
A boy named Nathan joins Joel and Daniel and then Joel brings a boy named Kemuel, and the boys have meetings at Simon`s house. They choose the bronze bow as their symbol, the bronze bow from the Psalm of David.
Chapter 13
Mathace came with Joel to visit Leah, and they hit off right away. They started talking and Daniel was surprised. He thought Leah would be scared. Daniel bought Leah a piece of cloth to use to make beautiful things for herself with.
Chapter 14
Daniel goes back to the mountain and no one cares that he is back except for Samson, who brings for supper a big sheep.Daniel can`t sleep, so he goes home. When he gets there,he finds that Leah has not taken care of herself or the house. It is like she has lifeless while he is gone.(She is alive though.)
Chapter 15
Daniel goes every morning to hear Jesus preach because he can`t get Jesus`s words out of his head. He tells Leah about each morning and she is always excited to hear about it. Thacia`s (Malthace`s) visits seem to make Leah more hopeful and they open up a new world for her. Every time Thacia visited, she brought Leah a present, and Leah loved this.
Chapter 16
Daniel makes a bronze bow out of a scrap piece of bronze and repeats the psalm of David in his head. Rosh gave Joel an assignment to find out a bout a banquet that was being held, to help with a plan. while Joel was doing this, Thacia dresses up as Joel and goes home with Daniel so people think she is Joel. When they are at Simon`s house, Daniel gives Thacia the bronze bow that he had made and then he walks her home.
Chapter 17
Rosh had raided the houses of all the people who had gone to the banquet because he knew those people were rich and the news was all over town. The Romans had left a huge catapult unguarded and Daniel and his band of Zealots who had formed, (About twenty boys),took it a part during the night.
Chapter 18
Thacia comes and tells Daniel that the Romans has captured Joel. Rosh will not help save Joel so Daniel has to take things into his own hands. He, as the leader of the new band of Zealots comes up with a plan to save Joel.
Chapter 19
Daniel and the band of Zealots wait for the caravan with Joel to come past and then they free Joel. But all because of this, Nathan and Samson are both dead. Joel said that they should have let him die instead.
Chapter 20
Joel and Malthace have not visited for nine days and Daniel is starting to worry. Then finally Joel comes for a visit. He tells Daniel that he is to go to school in Jerusalem, and he is going tomorrow. He gives Leah a gift from Thacia who con not leave the house from her father. Joel tell Daniel that he is invited to a dance that Thacia will be in, and Daniel says he will think about it. Joel says that he is going to go and warn Jesus about his enemies and that when the time comes that Daniel has to leave, Leah can stay at their house. And then he leaves.
Chapter 21
Daniel went to visit Jesus and he told Jesus about his vow and how he felt that the deaths of his friends were hie fault. Jesus told him that his vow was not a vow of hate and that his friends had given their lives in love for him.
Chapter 22
Daniel went to see Thacia dancing on the day of Atonement and then left because he felt out of place in the crowd. Thacia stopped him and asked him why he was leaving. He told her that he felt out of place and she asked him to stay. Then she asked him if he thought he was a little girl any more and he said, no. He realized that he liked thacia
Chapter 23
Daniel went to find Jesus so he could heal Leah but Jesus had go somewhere with three of his disciples. He talked to Simon about how to be free with chains on and Simon said your heart should be free of fear and hate.
Chapter 24
Daniel sent Joktan to get Thacia because Leah is dying. They don't come back for three days and Daniel gets worried. All this time, Marcus, the solider is waiting to say goodbye to Leah before he leaves. Then Thacia comes with Jesus and Daniel begins to wonder if only love could bend a bow of bronze. Jesus then heals Leah and then invited Marcus in to say goodbye before he left. He did not hate him after this.
